Mint Gold & Dollars in Demand

Inventory Values Rising

The overall market continues to have dealers smiling, as coin values are rising across a wide range of issues. Increased demand is pushing up prices on many charts, and coins are trading more readily. Inventory turn-over is also rising, meaning that dealers are selling more and profiting more. Once again, a broadly rising market has made the holding of inventory profitable for dealers. Every dealer has to constantly evaluate his inventory in terms of the market and his customer base; guessing correctly coming trends and demand can mean substantial profits. A major dealer recently reminded us that "the last 4-5 months (or slightly more) have been the best time in years to actually have inventory;" a rising market means inventory is a real asset, while a declining market makes inventory seem more like a liability.

The May market also continues strong on the auction front. May 19th will see a Bullet Sale presented by Heritage Numismatic Auctions at the Spring East Coast Expo, followed by a sale of U.S. material by Spink America on Saturday at the same Show. Back on the West Coast, as part of the pre-Long Beach festivities, Superior will be hosting a three-catalogue sale; two are significant offerings of world and ancient coinage, and one of appeal to collectors of American coins. Superior's May 29, 30, 1995 Auction features three specialized collections, the Farrington Collection of Bust Halves, Commemorative Coins, and California Fractional Gold (nearly 400 lots!). Collectors of American Gold will have both rarity and quality to inspect and pursue. Among the highlights:
